KDP and IngramSpark Cover Files: A Preflight Checklist for Authors
A print cover can look perfect on screen and still trigger an upload warning. Most problems come from mismatched specifications: an old page count, the wrong template, missing bleed, unsafe spine text, or a barcode conflict. Use this KDP and IngramSpark cover-file checklist before submission.
1. CONFIRM THE FINAL FORMAT
Write down the printer, binding, trim size, paper color, interior type, and final page count. A paperback, hardcover, and large-print edition are separate products with separate dimensions.
2. DOWNLOAD A FRESH TEMPLATE
Generate the template from the platform you are actually using. KDP and IngramSpark both provide cover templates based on production details. Do not stretch an old template or assume another book with the same trim size has the same spine.
3. VERIFY THE FULL WRAP SIZE
The uploaded print cover normally includes back, spine, and front in one PDF. KDP requires 0.125 inch bleed on the top, bottom, and outside edges when artwork runs to the trim. The spine width changes with page count and paper.
4. CHECK EVERY SAFE AREA
Keep essential text, logos, faces, and small details away from trim and fold zones. Background images can extend through bleed; critical content should not. KDP notes that binding can vary and requires space around spine text.
5. REVIEW SPINE TEXT ELIGIBILITY
A thin book may not have room for readable spine type. KDP currently prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages. Even when text is allowed, it must fit comfortably inside the spine safe area.
6. RESERVE THE BARCODE AREA
Know whether the platform will place a barcode or you will supply one. Keep important art and text clear of that space. If you provide a barcode, confirm that the ISBN matches the title setup.
7. INSPECT IMAGES AND COLOR
Use high-resolution source images and examine them at print size. Look for compression artifacts, accidental transparency, weak shadow detail, and color shifts. A bright screen is not a reliable proof of printed density.
8. EMBED FONTS AND EXPORT CLEANLY
Use a print-ready PDF with fonts embedded and without crop marks, comments, watermarks, or password protection. KDP lists unflattened transparent objects, locked files, crop marks, and placeholder text among common submission failures.
9. PROOF AT 100 PERCENT
Open the exported PDF and inspect it at actual size. Read every line. Check the spine direction, back-cover punctuation, logo sharpness, ISBN, and title consistency. Then order a physical proof whenever the schedule allows.
10. KEEP THE SOURCE FILES
Archive the final manuscript page count, template, cover PDF, fonts and licenses, linked images, and approval notes. Future corrections and new formats become much easier.
